CURRICULUM
At VGNS, we offer a nurturing and structured environment where children can grow, learn, and thrive through the power of play. Our preschool programs are thoughtfully designed to support the developmental needs of young learners, providing a balance of creative play and structured activities. This approach helps prepare children for the exciting next steps in their educational journey, fostering curiosity, social skills, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our curriculum is designed to foster all areas of a child’s
development including:
- Social/Emotional
- Physical
- Cognitive
- Language & Literacy
- Mathematics
- Creative Arts
- Science & Social Studies
Themes encompass:
- Community Awareness
- Children’s Book Authors
- Nature
- Shapes & Colors
- Nursery Rhymes
- Healthy & Safety
DAILY ACTIVITIES
The program provides a balance of unstructured and structured, active and quiet times:
Choice Time: Learning Centers are set up around the room for children to
explore.
Large Group Activities: A time to discuss the daily theme, sing songs, and read
books, etc.
Small Group Activity: One teacher works with a small group of children,
focusing on a specific skill. This may involve art, science, games, or movement
activities that incorporate the skill.
Snack: Parents provide a healthy snack for their child.
Outdoor Play: We have a fenced-in playground behind the school. Play
equipment includes a sandbox, playhouse, crawl tube, and much
more. It is an opportunity for children to use outside voices, release energy, and develop gross motor skills.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
Village Green is a family-oriented school. We offer a program that invites the whole family to become involved.
• Open-door policy that encourages parents to visit the classroom
• Volunteer for special classroom activities
• Field trip chaperones
• Share a talent or cultural information
• Parent/Teacher conferences
• Workshops
• Parents on our Board of Directors
LENDING LIBRARY
The Therese MacCallum Lending Library contains a large collection
of books for children to choose from. Children visit the library once
every two weeks to borrow a book.
The library also offers a parent section that includes parenting
books, picture books for parents to read to children, dealing with
such issues as moving, new siblings, and death. We also have
science, math, music, and literacy kits for parents to explore with
their children.
FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Bedtime Story Time: Families participate in an evening of stories and songs. Teachers present stories in various formats to show parents how stories are presented in the classroom. Families also sing along to our favorite preschool songs.
Annual Holiday Celebration & Concert: Both age groups celebrate the winter holidays and the winter vacation. The Curious Creators class holds an in-class celebration, while the Joyful Learner students present a holiday concert followed by a holiday party.
Special Person’s Evening: VGNS students are invited to bring their favorite special person to an evening of special activities.
Graduation: Our Joyful Learners classes choose their favorite songs and poems for their graduation program. This is a big family event on the last day of school.
